  1. Dec 1, 2023, 10:00am - 12:00pm

Join OSU's Forest Entomologist, Sam Ward to explore why we have so many insect invaders.  Globalization has facilitated the unintentional and international movement of insects. Many of these invading species have been forest insects, due to the exchange of live plants and widespread use of wood packaging materials in global trade. This talk will cover the patterns and processes that have shaped forest insect invasions in the United States, emphasizing the state of Ohio.

  2. Nov 29, 2023, 10:00am - 3:00pm

We have shared our landscapes with wild animals, including predators, throughout our history. The relationships we've had with them have evolved over the years, rooted in learned behavior and at times, fear. As we continue to develop and urbanize our country, predators are being forced to overcome their fear of us in search of new spaces to live.

  3. Nov 3, 2023, 10:00am - 12:00pm

White rots, brown rots, heart rot, oh my! Join Erika Lyon, OSU Extension Education for Jefferson and Harrison Counties, as we learn about these fungal structural designers found in woodlands across the state and their overall role in forest health.

  4. Nov 1, 2023, 10:00am - 3:00pm

Invasive species dominate the conversation with woodland owners and landowners across the state.  While there may be visible signs of these pests, sometimes we can’t readily see some of their impacts on the landscape.  This class will try to point out what the impacts are as we look at managing our natural resources in the future.

  5. Oct 27, 2023, 10:00am - 12:00pm

Join us during Bat Week on October 27th for our Friday’s Escape to the Forest webinar.  Join Marne Titchenell, OSU Extension Wildlife Program Director, along with Eileen Wyza, Wildlife Biologist with the ODNR-Division of Wildlife, and Angela Boyer, Endangered Species Coordinator with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as we discuss the ecology and status of bats in Ohio and how forest landowners can support bats on their property.

  6. Oct 16, 2023, 3:00pm - 7:00pm

This hands on-workshop will begin in the woods with tapping and sap collection options and discussions of producing maple syrup and conclude with dinner and value added options and retail considerations.

  7. Oct 13, 2023, 9:30am - 3:00pm

Fungi of many types can be found in every woodlot throughout Ohio. They get overlooked, ignored and/or avoided by visitors to the woods because people don’t know what they are, have limited knowledge, or have been misinformed as to their importance or dangers. Fungi are quite intriguing once one gets to know them, their life histories, their ecological importance and their diversity. Come join us for a day in the woods of learning what these fascinating organisms are and the beauty they possess.

  8. Sep 16, 2023, 9:00am - 1:30pm

Are you a woodland owner who would like to produce an annual income from their property?  It can be difficult to achieve an annual income but maple production may be the answer. This workshop will introduce woodland owners to the ins and outs of maple syrup production.  Is your woods suitable?  Are you wanting to explore maple as a hobby?  How involved do you want to be?  How much are you willing to invest into such an endeavor?  We will start inside and finish the day outside looking at equipment options.

  9. Sep 8, 2023, 9:00am - 3:00pm

Wetlands are incredibly important features of the natural landscape, providing countless ecosystem services to local ecology and wildlife. Join the School of Environment & Natural Resources' Gabe Karns, Jo Peacock, and Marne Titchenell as we discuss these fascinating habitats and the plants and wildlife that depend upon them. We will use the restoration of the OSU Mansfield Campus' Milliron Wetland as a case study to explore wildlife habitat and non-native invasive species management.  This class will begin indoors and end outdoors at the Milliron Wetland.

  10. Aug 30, 2023, 12:00pm - 1:00pm

Learn about pollinators at this Ecolab event! See how research works to create pollinator habitat along Ohio’s utility right of ways, learn about native bees and butterflies, and talk to natural resource experts about the critical need for pollinator habitat.  Don’t miss this fun event (no need to register)! We will be serving pancakes with OSU maple syrup!
